There is power in unity

One stick is easy to break. But take a bunch of them, you'll have a pretty hard time breaking them together. Likewise, an entire pit of charcoal cooks food well at a barbecue but you might end up with food poisoning with just one lonely piece of charcoal.

There is power in unity.

The church is not a building or merely a group in which we have an official membership to (like a club?), but the church is us - the community of God chasers, hearts joiners and light givers.

Psalm 133:1 - Behold, how good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell in unity!

Yet, we are also a body of imperfect beings and like every imperfect family in this world, there is bound to be disagreements. so how do we strive towards unity amidst all these disagreements etc?

Firstly, it is important to know that unity is our responsibility. All of us are commanded in the Bible to be slow to anger and to love one another. We are in trouble if we choose to focus on our differences and expending all our energy upon trying to get everyone to agree with us. Of course, by differences we mean minor differences like whether rock music or hymns are better for example - things that do not compromise on truth. All of us do not have a perfect understanding of God (see 1 Corinthians 13:12), hence we all might have different opinions about how we should worship - much like the story about different blind men touching different parts of an elephant and having different incomplete pictures of how it looks like. It is only when Christ returns that our vision of God will be whole.

Are we more concerned about being right at the expense of relationships with others? Why not choose to agree to disagree?

Well, the truth is, we all are prideful. The main ingredient in unity is humility. In Philippians 2:3, we are called to put aside selfish ambition and to instead think of others as better than ourselves. It is not a call for us to think less of ourselves, but to think of ourselves less (yes there is a difference).

Will we, starting from today, choose to think of ourselves less and step into community with the body of Christ? Let us not give Satan a foothold over us by allowing him to cause disunity because there is great power in unity and he knows that!
